A few weeks ago I was experimenting with craft supplies and came up with a simple project that produces high-end-looking room decor on a very small budget.
In this tutorial I’ll show you how to make a DIY wire sculpture using inexpensive materials and less than 30 minutes of hands-on time. I also created a free template you can use as a guide.

MATERIALS NEEDED
- Armature wire
- Air dry clay (a terracotta version would be lovely left unpainted)
- Download your flower art template below for free.
- Jute twine (optional)
- Paint for the base (optional)
- Spray paint for the sculpture (optional)
- Needlenose pliers (optional but useful)
- Wire snips
How to Make an Easy DIY Wire Sculpture
To create a DIY wire sculpture, start with an air-dry clay base, poke a hole through it, then shape a length of armature wire to follow a printed continuous-line drawing of the artwork you choose.
As long as the art’s line is continuous, paint the base your favorite color, insert the wire stem into the hole you made, and you’re finished.
Step 1: Shape the base of your sculpture

Take a chunk of air-dry clay about the size of your palm and roll it into a ball. This will form the base of your sculpture. Once you like the shape, press the ball down firmly onto the table to create a flat bottom so the base will stand solidly.
We press the clay to form a stable base that will rest nicely on a shelf or table.
Step 2: Smooth any imperfections from the clay

Keep a small bowl of water nearby and dip your fingers to smooth cracks or creases in the clay. You can make the base perfectly smooth or leave some texture—either look works. Note that air-dry clay can shrink slightly as it dries, but with a solid simple base you’re unlikely to have problems.
Step 3: Wrap the base in jute to create texture

Optional: wrap the clay base with jute twine, starting at the bottom and keeping the twine snug as you go. This adds nice visual depth and leaves a textured impression in the clay.

Before removing the twine, place the ball on a plate to dry—this keeps your work surface clean while the base cures. Press the twine gently into the clay so it leaves a clear pattern, then pull the twine off. The result is a pleasing textured surface.
Step 4: Poke a hole in the base to hold your wire sculpture
Using the armature wire, poke the end into the top center of the clay base and push straight down to the bottom to form a snug channel for the wire stem.
If the hole is deep enough, the wire will be secure without glue. Set the base aside to dry completely for a couple of days.
Step 5: Shape your wire along your printed art template

Print the artwork you want to use as a guide (I made a free template for this project) and place it on your work surface. Bend the wire to follow the continuous line of the design, using needlenose pliers for tight angles or sharp turns. When the shape is finished, cut the remaining wire from the spool with wire snips.
Once the wire shape is complete, spray-paint it on all sides, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly. Two coats are usually enough.
Step 6: Paint your wire sculpture base

When the clay base is fully dry, paint it in the color you prefer. I used several layers of red tones to add depth, but a single solid color or an unpainted terracotta finish also look great. Let the paint dry completely.

When the base paint is dry, insert the end of your wire sculpture into the hole. If the piece feels a bit wobbly, you can secure it with a small drop of super glue, but often the snug fit is enough.

There you have it—an easy DIY wire sculpture that looks designer-made without the cost. I hope this project inspires you to try different shapes, finishes, and base textures to match your decor.
