Orange Julius Smoothie Recipe with Gluten-Free and Vegan Options

A childhood favorite, this Orange Julius Smoothie is bright, creamy, and refreshingly tangy. The combination of sweet orange, banana, and vanilla yogurt creates a smooth, icy drink that satisfies a citrus craving while adding a boost of vitamins and comforting flavor.

When colds ran through our family recently, I wanted a simple way to add extra nutrition. Oranges are an easy, familiar source of vitamin C and blend beautifully into smoothies, making them a practical and delicious choice.

What is vitamin C good for?

Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, helping to neutralize free radicals, and it plays a role in collagen production for healthy skin and nails. It also supports the immune system and improves absorption of iron from plant-based foods. Some research is exploring potential links between vitamin C and cancer or cardiovascular protection, though these areas are still being studied. There is also limited evidence that regular vitamin C intake may slightly shorten colds or reduce symptom severity.

Which foods contain vitamin C?

Oranges are not the only option. Kiwi, potatoes, red peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, and cantaloupe are all good sources of vitamin C. Keep in mind that prolonged storage and cooking can reduce vitamin C content, so fresh fruit and lightly prepared foods retain more of this nutrient.

How much vitamin C do you need?

Recommended daily amounts for adults are about 75 mg for women and 90 mg for men, with higher needs for smokers and certain life stages such as breastfeeding. While vitamin C is important, very high supplemental doses can cause side effects; the upper limit for most adults is generally around 2000 mg per day.

This smoothie gets its sweetness from fresh orange and orange juice while banana and vanilla yogurt contribute creamy texture. Greek yogurt is a great choice for extra protein, though dairy-free vanilla yogurts work well for a plant-based version. If you want to lower added sugars, choose unsweetened yogurt. Using whole fruit adds fiber, and stirring in a couple of tablespoons of hemp hearts before blending boosts healthy fats, plant protein, and extra fiber without altering flavor much. It’s an easy, kid-friendly afternoon snack or a bright start to the day.
