I love a clean kitchen, but sometimes a few touch-ups make all the difference. Here are practical kitchen cleaning hacks to help you get those often-overlooked spots spotless.
With more time at home lately, I’ve tackled odd jobs I usually put off. After organizing and donating when possible, I turned my focus to deep-cleaning areas of the kitchen that usually get neglected.
Kitchen Cleaning Hacks
Below are simple, effective tasks that refresh your kitchen without much fuss.
Clean behind the fridge
Pull your refrigerator away from the wall and vacuum the coils and surrounding area. Removing dust and debris helps your fridge run more efficiently and can lower energy use.
I learned this the hard way when our refrigerator began acting up during a stay-at-home period. Replacing a fan helped, and while it was out we thoroughly cleaned the area behind the unit. Regular maintenance like this prevents problems and keeps the space hygienic.
Tip: Inspect the floor and wall behind the fridge while it’s pulled out — spills and crumbs hide there and attract pests.
Wipe down your cabinets
Always follow your cabinet manufacturer’s care instructions, but for general cleaning I dilute a mild wood cleaner like Murphy’s Oil Soap and use a soft cloth to wipe cabinet exteriors, interiors, tops, bottoms and hinges.
Cabinets near the stove often collect grease and sticky splatters. For gummy residue, I use a product formulated to remove adhesives on a dry rag, then clean the surface with a damp cloth and mild detergent to remove any oily traces. Lemon essential oil can sometimes help as a natural alternative.
Finish by wiping everything with a clean damp cloth so no residue remains. The difference is immediate and the cabinets look refreshed.

Wipe down your kitchen cabinets – again!
Yes — check the underside of lower cabinets. When you scrub floors, look up at the cabinet bases and inside toe-kick areas. Spatters and spills often reach those undersides and baseboards.
A damp cloth with mild dish soap removes most of the build-up. Vacuum first to pick up loose debris — it makes scrubbing much easier.

Cleaning these hidden spots gives the whole kitchen a more finished, cared-for look.

Shine your stainless steel appliances
Stainless steel looks great in showrooms, but at home it quickly shows fingerprints and smudges. A quick wipe with a glass cleaner or a product made for stainless steel removes sticky fingerprints and restores shine.
In the past I used wax to reduce fingerprints, but most days a quick spray and wipe is all that’s realistic — and it works well.

Open your dishwasher
Open the dishwasher and inspect the rubber seal and the sides of the door — these areas don’t always get cleaned by a cycle and can trap food residue, sticky sauces, and grime.

Before:
I found crusty residue and jam along the seal even after running the dishwasher. Use a soft cloth or sponge with mild dish soap to wipe the seal and door panels thoroughly, then dry to prevent mildew.
After:

Freshen up your sink
For sinks that hold onto odors and stains, try a natural scrub: baking soda, a few drops of citrus essential oil, and a splash of white vinegar.
Use about 1/2 cup baking soda in a bowl, add a few drops of lemon or lime essential oil, then mix in 2–3 tablespoons of white vinegar. The fizz helps lift grime. Scrub the sink with the mixture, rinse thoroughly, and enjoy a fresh-smelling, cleaner surface.
Note: I’ve used this on a composite sink; test first on other sink materials to ensure compatibility.
Wipe down the inside of the microwave
This chore isn’t my favorite, but it makes a big difference. To loosen splatters, fill a microwave-safe cup with water and add a tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice. Microwave for 1–2 minutes, let it sit a minute to cool slightly, then wipe the interior with a damp cloth. The steam and acid help loosen stuck-on food so it wipes away easily.
Remind family members to cover their food to prevent future splatter, and keep a quick-clean routine for the microwave to avoid tough build-up.
I hope these kitchen cleaning hacks help you tidy up the spots you usually overlook. If you have a particular problem area you’re tackling, describe it in a comment and I’ll share tips to help.
