Hi, I’m Emily, and I’m hooked on energy balls.

I don’t usually meal prep—my job keeps me cooking—but I always keep a batch of energy balls in the fridge. They kickstart my mornings and fuel my workouts. I experiment with flavors often, but the chocolate peanut butter version is my current favorite.

Chocolate and peanut butter for breakfast? Yes, please. But these bites aren’t limited to mornings. They make a perfect afternoon pick-me-up, a healthy lunchbox treat, or a portable snack for trips and picnics. They store well in the fridge for up to a week and freeze for up to six months.

One of the best things about energy balls is how simple they are. Combine eight pantry-friendly ingredients in a bowl and mix until they form a thick, sticky dough. Chill the mixture in the freezer for 15 minutes—this makes rolling much easier—then portion and roll into bite-sized balls. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week or freeze for long-term storage.

My dream is to have the freezer stocked with a variety of energy ball flavors so I don’t have to make them for weeks. A girl can dream, right?

These energy balls are made with nutrient-dense ingredients: oats and honey for steady carbs, flax seed meal and peanut butter for healthy fats and protein, and cocoa powder for chocolate flavor and antioxidants. One or two of these chocolate peanut butter energy balls deliver a satisfying boost of energy.

If you want to explore other flavors, try matcha cherry, chocolate mint, chai spiced, or almond joy energy balls—there are so many delicious variations to enjoy. Try them all and find your favorite.

Description

Packed with nutrient-dense ingredients, these energy balls deliver a quick burst of energy with all the chocolate and peanut butter flavor you love.

Ingredients

Units

Scale
  • 1/2 cup flax seed meal
  • 1 cup gluten free old fashioned oats
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup + 3 tablespoons natural peanut butter (creamy or chunky; ingredients ideally just peanuts and salt)
  • 1/3 + 1 tablespoon honey
  • Optional: 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips (use dairy-free chips if needed)

Instructions

  1. Mix ingredients: Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl. Use a firm spatula to combine everything until a thick, sticky dough forms. If needed, use clean hands to finish mixing.
  2. Test consistency: Squeeze a small portion between your fingers—if it holds together, it’s ready. If it’s crumbly, add more peanut butter and honey, a little at a time.
  3. Chill the dough: Cover and freeze for 15 minutes or until the dough is less sticky and easier to handle.
  4. Form the balls: Use a small cookie scoop (about 2 tablespoons) or your hands to portion the dough. Roll into bite-sized balls and transfer to an airtight container. Store in the fridge up to one week or in the freezer up to six months.
