Welcome to the 13 Days of Halloween Ideas 2020! Bri from Parties With A Cause and I have been sharing creative ways to celebrate Halloween at home with your family. Today we’re focusing on simple, family-friendly activities. I transformed a classic carnival favorite — the can toss — into an easy backyard game the kids can play safely.
Easy Halloween Activities for Families
This project is perfect because both making the game and playing it are fun family activities. It’s also easy to store and pull out again for future Halloween gatherings or a neighborhood carnival.
Here’s what you’ll need to make this DIY can toss game:
- 10 empty cans of the same size
- White cardstock
- Glitter cardstock or colored paper
- Scissors
- A cutting tool or craft knife
- Hot glue gun
- Printable labels (see details below to get these delivered to your inbox)

The printable can labels are available for newsletter subscribers. Sign up to have them delivered straight to your inbox. I recommend printing the labels on sturdy white cardstock — regular printer paper is often too thin for a clean look and durability.

Cut the white cardstock to the height of your cans so it wraps around completely, and secure the ends with hot glue. Next, cut strips of glitter or colored cardstock to create a decorative band around the middle of each can. Cut out the printable labels and glue them over the glitter bands for a festive finish.

To play, stack the cans in a pyramid with four cans on the bottom row, then three, two, and one on top. Use a bean bag, soft ball, or even a rolled-up pair of socks as a safe projectile, and take turns trying to knock down the pyramid. Remind players to stay behind the throwing line and never walk behind the cans while someone is throwing to keep everyone safe.

Bri at Parties With A Cause is also sharing a neighborhood-friendly idea: Halloween Boo Bags with a free printable. It’s a great way to connect with neighbors and spread some Halloween cheer while maintaining distance.
